Why is the bill so high? See the units for every appliance and find out where you can save.

Home appliances

Enter how many of each you have and how many hours a day it runs. You can change the wattage (it’s printed on the appliance label). Set the count to 0 to leave it out.

What if you install rooftop solar?

How units are counted

1 unit = 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh), i.e. a 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour. Formula: watts × count × hours ÷ 1,000 = units per day; multiply by 30 for the month. For example, a 75-watt fan running 10 hours a day: 75 × 10 ÷ 1000 = 0.75 units a day, or about 22 units a month.

  • A fridge stays plugged in day and night, but its compressor runs on and off, so the tool assumes it runs about 40% of the time.
  • The AC uses the most electricity. An inverter AC runs less once the room is cool, so the tool counts it lower than a non-inverter AC.
  • Slabs: in most states, the more units you use, the higher the rate. So saving 10–20 units cuts usage in your last, most expensive slab.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

For rooftop solar on homes, the central government gives a subsidy of ₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, and up to ₹78,000 for 3 kW or more. Apply on pmsuryaghar.gov.in through your DISCOM. Some states give an additional subsidy too.

Your actual bill depends on your state’s slabs, meter rent, fuel surcharge and subsidies. This tool gives an estimate.
